A walk through histrory in Lisbon

Lisbon was a great city defended by about 15,000 Moors and well fortified, which made it diifficult to conquer by surprise attack. At the end of June, 1147 D. Afonso Henriques (the first Portuguese king) with the help of about 15,000 crusaders on their way to the Holy Land and with a Portuguese army of about 30,000 combatants, laid siege to Lisbon. After 3 months on 21st. October legend has it that the knight, Martim Moniz and a small group of crusaders forced open the gates of the castle.

Walk in Sintra, Portugal

A great walk in Sintra, Portugal. (Distance 4.5 km about 1.5 hours)
A walk starting from the main square in Sintra Vila, in front of the National Palace to the Pena Palace, the Moors castle and back to Sintra.

Palácio e Parque da Pena (Pena Palace and Park), is a magical fantasy of domes, towers and ramparts crowning the Serra de Sintra. Built in the 1840’s to the specifications of Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Maria II. Inside the palace, which has been preserved since the royal family left Portugal in 1910, is a bizarre mix of luxuriously decorated, fascinating rooms. From the palace you can enjoy some of the best all-round views. Surrounding the palace is a splendid park and gardens with an abundance of flora.

Castelo dos Mouros. This Moorish castle dates back to the early days of the Moorish occupation of the peninsular in the 8th century having been later taken by Dom Afonso Henriques in 1147. Take note of the first Christian chapel to be built in the area dedicated to São Pedro de Penaferrim. In the  interior of the castle is a Moorish cistern and the royal tower. Winding over two ridges, this castle offers fantastic views of the area.

Back in Sintra why not try the traditional "travesseiros" at the café Periquita in Rua das Padarias - delicious.

The Eagles of Cabo da Roca, Sintra, Portugal.

On my walk today on the beautiful headland of Cabo da Roca with Chance our pet dog we encountered our usual friends. A pair of Bonelli Eagles soaring high in the blue sky above, calling to each other, a high pitch screeching sound. The upper-parts of these birds of prey are dark brown and the underside is white with dark streaks. A wonderful site to see on this breathtaking coastline of Portugal.

You will be able to see the Bonelli Eagles on some of my walks which are on offer on the walksinportugal web site. You will be able to download these in PDF format to print at home. I am offering one of these walks free - Sintra walk 05, a walk from Peninha, a castellated building on top of the hills of Sintra (Serra da Sintra) to Anta de Adrenunes, a dolmen or Megalithic tomb from the early Neolithic period, about 3000 to 4000 years ago.

I never stop to marvel at the flora and fauna here in Sintra and look forward to the next time I meet my friends.
